Heavy lifting is no horseplay at the Newmarket Equine Hospital
2011-10-27
The world class Equine Centre in Newmarket is the largest of it's kind in Europe and patients are transported from all around the world to be treated here. In order to operate, the horses need to be anaesthetized and carefully hoisted into the operating theatre under the supervision of a team of highly qualified surgeons and veterinary nurses. It's worth noting that some of the horses that are sent here for treatment are many millions of pounds, so the reliability of the hoists used for this purpose was a major concern for the lifting contractor, EST Ltd, when the hoists were installed in the custom built building in 2007.
Having used GIS EM hoists in their previous surgery on Newmarket High Street the senior partner of the veterinary practice, Mr David Ellis, contacted EST at the planning stage and gave them carte-blanche to specify, supply and install all of the lifting equipment with the proviso that GIS products were the first choice where available.
Mr Idris Roberts of EST said of the hoists “The Swiss precision design & quality lends itself to the occasional wet environment and demanding nature of the operations“ which is why two GCH1000/2N hoists on electric travel trolleys were installed into the brand new hospital building in 2007. The EM hoists had been superseded by the GCH model since the first installation so EST offered these to the Equine Hospital in place of the EM hoists. This was initially of some concern to the centre who were accustomed to and extremely pleased with the original model, however the hoists have performed 100% since they have been installed and both EST and the hospital couldn't be happier.
Peter Ashford of Lift Turn Move, the UK agent for GIS and original supplier of the hoists, visited the Newmarket Equine Hospital last month to see the hoists in action. “This just goes to show the engineering quality of these hoists. These are standard GIS hoists in situ in a wet room, where they are exposed to a damp environment including intermittent hosing down, and the hoists are performing magnificently.“ Speaking about EST and the hospital in general he said “The centre is fantastic, the staff are great and everything is incredibly professional. We're really pleased that they chose EST and GIS hoists for this application. It's a pleasure to be working with such a high quality lifting service provider like EST.“
